But how reconcile this with that which would inevitably have happened in the supposition of mere espousals? If Joseph and Mary had been only afiianced at the time of the incarnation of the Word, their relation to each other must have been in no way changed four months later; for the Gospel tells us that Mary, after the annunciation, set out in all haste to visit St. Elizabeth, and that it was only at her return from the journey of Hebron, which occupied three months, that she was known to be pregnant, a phrase indicating a position visible to every eye. The marriage of Mary would not then be celebrated, as her pregnancy had been known, manifest, and undeniable. What would have been thought by both families? What would all Nazareth, hastening to witness the ceremony, have said? What vile reproaches the Virgin would have to encounter from a people who held female honour in such high repute, that a violation of it was invariably punished by death! The birth of the Messiah, that birth which was to be as unspotted as the morning dew, as David poetically expresses it, would it not have been stained and sullied? The Jews, and in particular the Jews of Nazareth, who manifested such hostility to Jesus Christ, and who designated him the con of the carpenter, would they not have bitterly reproached him with the irregularity of his birth? If they have not done so, no other reason can be assigned than that of having no pretext of that nature. Genesis xxiv., 40. t Mischna, b. 3, de Sponsalibus. Bart...
